Jack the Ripper might be in town. But is marriage more terrifying?
In an alternate Deep South in 1890, society reporter Adele de la Pointe wants to make her own way in the world, despite her family’s pressure to become a society wife. Hoping to ruin herself as a matrimonial prospect, she seizes the opportunity to cover the recent Jack the Ripper-style murders for the newspaper, but her father's dashing new intern suggests a more terrifying headline—marriage.
Dr. Phillip Rawley’s most daring exploit has been arriving at his new home in America in a hot air balloon. A tolerable sacrifice, if it means he can secure the hand of his new employer’s daughter in a marriage of convenience. But Adele works, she's spirited, and she has an armored pet monkey running her errands. Not only does she not match his notions of a proper lady, she stirs up feelings he’d rather keep in tight control.
With Adele hunting down a headline and Dr. Rawley trying to protect and pursue her, a serial killer is spreading panic throughout Mobile, Alabama. Can Adele and Rawley find the murderer, face their fears, and discover true love?

If you love Historical Romance/Mystery/Adventure - this book is for you! Don't let the "Steampunk" scare you away. The Steampunk aspect is a small part that makes it very fun and interesting, but this story is so much more!!! The hero and heroin in the story are both independent, successful people but they each have low self-esteem when it comes to relationships. Throughout their adventures of trying to find a killer, they do a lot of self discovering and trying to figure out themselves as the other person sees them. The author's character development is outstanding! Beware, there are steamy love scenes (which I love), but even during those the author shares with us what the hero and heroin are thinking in their own minds which leads them to self discovery. I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next in the series. I highly recommend this book and any books by Angela Quarles.Product details

Steam Me Up Rawley A Steampunk Romance The Mint Julep Monocle Chronicles Book 1 edition by Angela Quarles Romance eBooks Reviews
I like romance in a story, but read few actual romances...maybe a few each year. Here's one that was recommended to me by a friend and I don't regret listening to her. It was fun, the main characters were flawed and real, the alternate history was fascinating, and the monkey was a delight. And it's all wrapped in a mystery. Absolutely worthwhile.
The story is set in an alternate version of Mobile. Quarles completely commits to the trope of Steampunk and has a lot of light hearted fun with the genre.
Even with the fact that there is a serial killer modeled after Jack the Ripper, the over all tone of the story remains light and romantic.
I enjoyed the chemistry between Rawley and Adele.
My book group read this for our online Smutty Buddy Read, and overall we enjoyed it quite a bit. The steampunk elements of this alternate Southern world (where Lincoln was never assassinated and served for three terms) are fun, and watching Adele attempt to get Crawley to not be so stiff upper lip'ped was rather amusing.
Romance is still a new genre for me, and I find myself wishing for more plot and less emotional angst. Sexy times are always a plus, and Quarles does not disappoint!
I read because I love original stories that I can get totally onto and feel like I'm right there watching the characters move through their "lives". This story has become a favorite!! Angela is an original storyteller and the depth of her characters comes through. The attention to detail in her steam punk descriptions makes it feel true. Forget my Jetson's flying car, I want a " miss smarty pants" !!!
There are so many fun things about this book. Where do I even start? I love that the author set the stage in Mobile, AL. It created a unique and fun twist within the steampunk genre. The heroine and hero were both imperfect (as well as irritatingly stubborn). But I enjoyed seeing their journey through the course of the story and watching their attraction blossom into romance. The nods to Jack the Ripper and Loki made me grin like a fool. I enjoyed the blend of old and new, the reality and the fantasy. So very exciting!
The author's voice is strong. She creates well rounded characters and paints a vivid picture of her world with glorious imagery that left me dazzled. Just enough detail to create a vivid image in my mind, but not too much as to distract from the flow of the story. Kudos to her for finding that perfect balance. It was sublime.
I loved this book, and I look forward to more of her work.
I loved this book - found it quaint, romantic, pastoral...an almost perfect world in which to lose oneself for a few hours.... The characters (Adele, Rawley and Loki and Aunt Linette particularly) are a lot of fun, and I appreciated the author's notes regarding the actual historical personages who walk or roll through these pages (Miss Eilands and Colonel Gillespie). I loved the steampunk elements of the tale, which mixed very nicely with a sweet and slightly sentimental romantic vision - lots of blue skies at the end (and I was happy to see them.....)
I'm definitely hoping for more in this series and its "Must Love" cousin. I'm curious about the alternative histories of Mobile, Tampa, Cuba....and the potential for adventures from Rex and Charlotte perhaps?
A note - I think that this book would appeal to many readers, even those who don't usually read many romances. I think that if you like Lemony Snicket or Jules Verne or Anthony Doerr, you will like this book. You will also like this book if you like Psych, Star Trek, Monk, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica....
